About the Conference

In December 2019, the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) and the European Cetacean Society (ECS) jointly hosted the World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain with local organizers SUBMON and the University of Barcelona.

Our goal was to bring together scientists, managers, policy-makers, educators and students from across the globe to discuss the world’s most exciting science and most pressing conservation issues. Due to overwhelming interest, we reached the maximum capacity 2,731 registered attendees coming from more than 95 different countries, “Together For Science and Conservation“!

The World Marine Mammal Conference offered an unparalleled opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue in order to foster international collaborations that will impact our understanding of marine mammal science and conservation.

The World Marine Mammal Conference also encouraged all participants to consider their carbon footprint while traveling to Barcelona, and applauds any actions taken to offset that impact.  Both Societies do not endorse any particular plan, and support participants investigating actions that are best for them.  The Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB) was chosen as our conference venue because of its environmental certificate of sustainability. To reduce Conference carbon emissions, we will not be printing the entire program, but will instead offer a small pocket guide, and your welcome package will contain a coffee mug that can be used throughout the conference.

Thank you to everyone who participated in WMMC! Together, we made it a huge success!
