About the Conference

In December 2019, the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) and the European Cetacean Society (ECS) will jointly host the World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Our local organizers are SUBMON and the University of Barcelona.

Our goal is to bring together scientists, managers, policy-makers, educators and students from across the globe to discuss the world’s most exciting science and most pressing conservation issues.

The World Marine Mammal Conference offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue in order to foster international collaborations that will impact our understanding of marine mammal science and conservation.

We hope you will join us this December!

August 2, 2019

Early bird registration deadline has been extended until September 4, 2019 12PM GMT+2.

If you have an accepted abstract, you have until the new early-bird deadline to make your registration and be included in the program.
Recipients of student travel grants will be notified before early bird registration deadline.

We have received overwhelming interest in WMMC’19, with a record 1, 964 abstracts submitted for consideration.

Due to space and time constraints, we can accommodate 650 oral/speed talk presentations and 1,300 posters. This makes it unfeasible to meet everyone’s first choice of presentation format. Therefore, many of you who asked for an oral or speed talk presentation have been allocated a poster. We apologize for not being able to meet everyone’s first choice of presentation format.

Final allocation of oral presentations (“Speed” – 4 minute presentation or “Oral” – 12 minute), both with 2 minutes for questions, will be made in August when the Scientific Committee meets in person and registration of attendees is confirmed.

The Scientific Committee has worked hard to accommodate as many submitted abstracts as possible and will work to host a program that facilitates an exchange of scientific ideas and the meeting of colleagues from other parts of the world. Development of a program with 5 concurrent sessions over 4 days that minimizes conflicts amongst sessions will be challenging, but we hope to make this conference valuable to all marine mammal scientists attending. To enhance the exchange of ideas and information, the poster sessions will have opportunity for discussion through the “poster PODs”, when groups of viewers led by an expert in the field will visit each poster. This allows more opportunity for conversation than a platform oral presentation.

How do I register for the conference?
